Shadow of the Panther Slot Machines Review

The Shadow of the Panther... where creatures can be found lurking in the jungle. Hidden in the thick canopy of the heavy vegetation, many simply try to hide and avoid the dangers that can be found on the ground. And yet, some of them hunt their prey from on high, waiting for the right moment to spring an ambush on their enemies.

Shadow of the Panther offers gamblers a 5x3 playing field with 30 flexible paylines, as well as several special features, including a free spins bonus, certain icons that appear super stacked, and a Wild that can substitute for all symbols, except Scatters.

The user interface is fully animated, with all the reels spinning at once at the same time. The visuals certainly are a bit under what you’d usually find on the market, but you can easily make out all the symbols and there’s a few cool animations thrown in as well. Most of the symbols are related to the theme itself, except for some playing card icons like A, K and Q.

As for the symbols that are associated with the theme, you can uncover several jewellery pieces lying around, as well as several pairs of humans, panthers, leopards and cheetahs all lurking in the shadows waiting to pounce on their enemies. A pair of dangerous panther eyes sit in the shadows to mark the game’s Wild, which can appear anywhere and can replace every symbol except the Scatters. Scatters are represented by a golden anthropomorphic panther, and the Scatter is also used to activate the free spins. It can also have two panthers on it at once, which counts as two Scatters in the same reel.

To win the free spins, you have to collect five or more Scatters, a rather sizeable jump over the expected three Scatters. Scatters only appear on the second, third, fourth and fifth reel, leaving you with a maximum of eight Scatters which will reward 15 free spins. The extra turns are played at the same bet as the one that triggered the feature, and there’s no ability to retrigger it, meaning the feature ends when 0 free spins remain.

When the pair of humans, panthers, leopards or cheetah symbols appear stacked, they can transform into a larger version of the same symbol. This is more of a visual flair thing rather than any improved gameplay.

As we already mentioned, Wilds can replace any other symbol on the reels except the Scatter one. When it is replacing the human, panther, cheetah or leopard icon, it always counts it as their double version instead of the singular one.

None of these special features are particularly amazing by themselves. In fact, it feels a bit more underwhelming compared to Valkyrie Queen as a result. The upsides being that with a lot of double symbols, there’s a bigger winning potential in theory, though it doesn’t always work out.

This High 5 release didn’t quite manage to make it entirely to our hall of fame, unfortunately. It comes with a 94.9% RTP and a maximum payout of 1000x times your wager for a five-of-a-kind Wild score. The visuals aren’t really up to modern expectations, and the gameplay fails to feel as engaging, even if the rewards are a little bit better.

When faced with the exciting new slot game theme from High 5 Games in the form of the Shadow of the Panther slot we had to ask ourselves a question: Exactly what is a werecat? Well, it turns out to be a misnomer and something of an anomaly. In history, Werecats were the feminine form of Werewolves, often using the features of any feline family such as plain domestic cats, tigers, lions, leopards, and many others – including some that never existed, except in mythology! This makes the Shadow of the Panther slot game very surprising as the protagonist is a darkly brooding jungle male, a nocturnal creature who turns into a Panther.

Originally the Shadow of the Panther slot was developed by High 5 Games as a land based casino slot for IGT. It’s no surprise then that it looks and feels a lot like the Jaguar Princess slot – another joint venture between the two companies. Overall, though, this is a different game engine and much darker theme both visually and audibly. There doesn’t necessarily have to be something to be frightened of though, it seems this night-time hunter is on your side, with super stacks and free spins in the game to help you find true riches in his jungle lair.

As with many of the collaborations between IGT and High 5 Games, the Shadow of the Panther slot is very easy to setup for even novice players. If you have only ever played older slots or table casino games like craps games don’t be phased, you can get to grips with this slot very easily. Accessibility too is good, with the game optimised for play with devices on the go it should be popular at many of the best online mobile casinos. There is the popular 5×3 reel grid in play on the slot with a maximum of 30 pay-lines to choose from over several groups. The exact choice is 1,5,9,15 or 30 lines in play. Betting is sensible at the bottom end with just one credit per line granting an entry level bet for all lines of 0.30 credits. At the top end a decent 10.00 credits per line and 300.00 credit max bet should be enough for most high stakes players.

The Shadow of the Panther slot has a generous 95% RTP and a medium variance level. This is what many people call a Goldilocks slot, enough risk to be exciting, not too much as to be too dangerous to a slot players bankroll. This applies to setup too. Whilst you can adjust the bet sizing and lines the other controls are quite minimal, everything you need and nothing more. A push button pay-table, credit and balance display, volume control and manual/auto-play options. One novel feature to High 5 Games is the last win reply, allowing you to relive those big wins.

The wooden framed reels on the Shadow of the Panther slot are gouged by claw marks from the nocturnal nightmare of the game theme, whilst the backdrop is a dark and menacing forest view from behind some ferns. It doesn’t go overboard to be too dark in the theme, the audio and animations for instance are a little lighter and go for excitement rather than frightening. Graphics are great without being too intensive for older devices, everything is well rendered but isn’t photo-realistic. There’s a nice array of bespoke symbols – eight of them in fact, with just three of the generic playing card icons used to fill the bottom of the pay-table.

At the top of the pay-table, somewhat fittingly for a wild animal theme, is the games wild symbol. This is a fixed wild and swaps out for all other symbols except the scatter to help you complete winning combinations. As an added bonus it’s also the most valuable individual symbol on the slot if you form it in an individual symbol combination with 1000x your line bet available for five-of-a-kind. Below this sits the half man / half panther who is the star of the game theme offering you 300x for a full set of x10, then come three big jungle cats and a variety of valuable jungle gems. Split symbols are in play here so you can pick up each of the high pay icons as a double, which you will need to for big wins as simple five-of-a-kinds offer somewhat diminished rewards, though your chances of doing so are good thanks to the randomly selected stacked symbol at the start of each game spin.

A golden Werecat forms the games scatter on four reels and is also a split symbol – giving a maximum of eight scatters you can collect. Grab them all in a single spin and you trigger the maximum number of free spins, 15 to be exact. This is far more than many other H5G slots and, with the super stacks and the wild in play the free spins feature offers some serious win potential even without a possibility of re-engaging it.

High 5 Games like to have a variety of both themes and game mechanics within their range so they can appeal to a wide variety of online slots players. The Shadow of the Panther slot is enjoyable enough in its own right to be a decent free to play online slot and has enough gambling action to make a worthy real money slot too. Overall it’s hard not to give this game a solid thumbs up and we are preparing our packs and heading off back into the jungle in search of the elusive and shadowy feline creature!
